Don't be afraid to use nicotine substitutes. When you are trying to heal a broken leg, you use crutches. There is a time for accepting help, and this is one of those times. Use whatever is available to you. Do whatever you can to be successful. And if you can make it through the first 3 days, you have been through the worst. Where I failed before, as did my friends, is thinking that we could have just one or two cigarettes and not 'start' again. You can't. If you stop, then STOP for good. Don't let them back in because it gets harder to quit each time you try. I eventually made it. You will too.

Congratulations and good luck!! I used nicotine patches for about four weeks and then started having nightmares so I stopped using it. I will be four years smoke free on the sixteen of this month. I think the key is to believe in yourself and your ability to accomplish this feat. Maybe you could start walking or try some other activity to keep your mind busy.

Make sure you are aware of Chantix's potentially VERY negative side effects.

I quit-doc gave me chantix-helped a bit but is VERY expensive-my Insurance wouldn't cover it-it'll get ya thru a month--but i found that after a couple weeks-ya could've been giving me a placebo-in fact, the whole time i could have been taking placebo-but still not smoking. I had a reason to quit-my mom is slowly dying of COPD-or emphysemia--but i can only say that just quitting cold turkey was the best for me-keep hard candies, suckers, etc near ya to ease the oral fixation, get rid of old habits, don't have that cup of coffee 1st thing-have a juice or something-break-up the links between old activities that then ended with smoking-no-ya don't have to give up sex either-there is a lot of support online too, email me if ya want more info-but I myself-personally-wouln't spend BeauCoup bucks on stop-smoking gimmicks. But-tale to lots of folks-the best bet is to just ride out the urge like a wave-soon you will learn the cravings AREN'T forever, they pass--and you will gain much strength, especially as you experience the benefits--$$$$$$$$$ is a good one-longer life is kinda nice too-good luck and don't beat yourself up if not perfect-youre tryin-just KEEP tryin and don't give up if ya slip. ((((HUGS))))

I would stay away from the Chantix. My sister took it and had some ill effects from it, although she did quit. Any drug that warns of suicide or the potential to severely alter your state of mind and well being should probably be left alone. Because of the fact that pharmaceutical companies do a good job of peddling these medications to the masses for profit, we have to be extra cautious for warning signs about a medication--hence the listing of all known side effects for every medication. Read the list on Chantix and I think you will think twice. It's not worth it. Cold turkey is hard for 30 days but rewarding and it teaches you a lesson a bit because you don't ever want to go through it again! Good luck...

I quit 7 years ago...and what really worked for me was the "gum" or "lozengers"....after all smoking is an "oral" addiction as well as the nicotine addiction and chewing gum or lozengers was the best for me...I felt better with something in my mouth(please don`t turn this into something ugly!) Good luck and don`t get discouraged...and don`t forget to REWARD yourself...
