as tkden said, another type of heroin management medication is buprenorphine, one of the active ingredients in suboxone, which is basically the new methadone. because methadone causes the patient to receive a 'high' similiar to that of heroin, it has a high risk of addiction itself, which in turn, instills the belief of it as a general failure. However, the chemicals in suboxone place themselves on the opiod (sp) receptors and kick of the active heroin molecules. In addition it takes care of withdrawal symptoms and because of a chemical that I believe is called Naltraxone (sp) disables the ability of the addict to get high from opiates, all without getting the patient high and thus, alleviating the addicts addiction. (Another buprenorphine based medication is Subutex; like suboxone it takes care of withdrawals but doesn't have Naltraxone, and instead, gets the addict high without disabling their ability to get high off opiates). Suboxone is so far the most successful of the management medications but if the patient stops taking the drug it can become problematic... after all, i believe something like only 5% of heroin addicts can stay sober over the course of a year. you should offer her any support you can (unconditional love wouldn't hurt either)
i've never heard of a drug that can stop the craving for heroin but there is a drug that stops the effects that heroin gives you.so taking heroin on top of this drug is a waste of time.its supposed to stop the person wanting to do herion.its called subutex.its a little white pill that you place under the tongu and let it dissolve.gets into bloodstrean faster through the veins under tongue.i was put on this but it can have side effects of messing up blood pressure,so was taken off and put back on methadone.
i am a heroin addict and i stopped using 6 years ago and got onto methadone. it was the worst decision i ever made. i have been trying to get off of methadone for the last 5 years and just got off of it finally a month ago... and YES you can get high off of it... i was high for the first 5 years i was on it.... once i got below 30 mgs i didn;t feel high.... ishould've tried to get on buprenorphine...
Methadone and buprephine (maybe misspelled) are some of the best treatments out there, as far as medication goes for heroin.

You're reading I have a friend who was addicted to oxy and heroin. She is in a study and takes a pill that is supposed to block something in her brain so she does not crave heroin? has anyone heard of this, and do you know the success rate?
Comments
I know...she is off of heroine but I can barely understand her sometimes...and then I feel bad. You know she use to be one of the prettiest girls I have ever seen!!:) She was beautiful and the heroine/oxy..just killed her. She is trying..but it is a tough road yo. I just don't know what to say to her..should I invite her over for coffee, and just talk..but then I don't know what to say.....

honestly, this is an extremely tought question and doesn't really have a definite answer. a lot of it depends on how long she was an addict; the longer the sime the less optimiistic they are about their abilit to get clean. The thing about a relapse is that it doesn't matter how long you've been clean, it can happen at any time, almost just as easily as on your first day. With that in mind, she's also probably thinking about how many other people have tried to give her an intervention or a conversation expressing concern and given all this, how exactly similiar they all sound. So if anything you almost need to catch her attention; subtly and without making youself seem like "just another 'concerned' friend". Having been 'talked to' myself for the same problem, I remember how disdainful they sounded. If you've been an addict yourself I wouldn't mention it to her unless she doesn't know, but it must be a legitimate addiction (nothing like overeating or video games).

coffee is a good idea, unless it isn't something you've done with her (then it would be obvious what your intentions are). you don't neccessarily want to trick her but i wouldn't make it blatantly obvious as to why you want to talk to her, simply allude that something is up. i would absolutely not mention rehab or Narcotics anonymous unless she asks first. just be casual and practical, express your concern once the topic comes up but the conversation calm. If you think she's starting to lose interest or expresses that she believes she's doing better, drop the subject. The only real suggestion I have for you of what to say is to ask a lot of questions. Don't talk about how much better things were because she's probably already thinking about it, that's what heroin can be for anyways, to forget about the real problems in our lives. How old is she? How old are you? How long has she been an addict and how long does she say she's been clean?

D A lala.. your whole speel there is pure unadulterated bullshit.
I've been on methadone for over 6 years now and not once have i ever been high on it. Wherever you got that info its sadly mistaken. Naltroxine is what they give addicts when they OD. it blocks the effects so it's put in buprenorphine which is sublingual so nobody will inject it.
If you want to read up on this stuff try http://www.atwatchdog.org You can get the real scoop instead of some bullshit put out by anti drug propagandists like DA

antidrug propagandists? hardly. why are you so angry lol
by D A lala on June 30th, 2009
I don't like people who lie to the unknowing about the effects of drugs. That makes them that much more dangerous than they ever were before.

NALOXONE is the other drug in suboxone. NARCAN is what they give you when you are overdosing. NOLOXONE is in suboxone so that you cannot shoot it up without getting sick. Also, if you were to do heroin or another opiate while the naloxone is in your system, it will not work. At least not as well.

thank you for the clarification lucybell. i hate to keep harping on this, legend, im just so unsure as to what parts of my speel are such bullshit. id been on bt for almost 4 years and tried methadone clinics with no success; i'll admit it didnt get me very high at that point, since it isnt all that strong of an opiate. regardless, long before i ever was addicted to h, i remember taking methadone pills recreationally which got me really f***ed up for almost the entire day! suboxone is the only thing that worked for me tho, and although they usually keep you on suboxone for a long while after you've "Recovered" to prevent relapse (as lucy said, if you take the pill you cant get high off opiates), ive stopped taking it and have not relapsed. however, youre still on methadone? it just frightens me so, to hear someone hate so much with absolutely no reason. so i reiterate; how am i lying? naltroxine is not a drug so i believe you are the propagandist- sad for someone so highly ranked...
