I have a friend who was addicted to oxy and heroin. She is in a study and takes a pill that is supposed to block something in her brain so she does not crave heroin? has anyone heard of this, and do you know the success rate?

as tkden said, another type of heroin management medication is buprenorphine, one of the active ingredients in suboxone, which is basically the new methadone. because methadone causes the patient to receive a 'high' similiar to that of heroin, it has a high risk of addiction itself, which in turn, instills the belief of it as a general failure. However, the chemicals in suboxone place themselves on the opiod (sp) receptors and kick of the active heroin molecules. In addition it takes care of withdrawal symptoms and because of a chemical that I believe is called Naltraxone (sp) disables the ability of the addict to get high from opiates, all without getting the patient high and thus, alleviating the addicts addiction. (Another buprenorphine based medication is Subutex; like suboxone it takes care of withdrawals but doesn't have Naltraxone, and instead, gets the addict high without disabling their ability to get high off opiates). Suboxone is so far the most successful of the management medications but if the patient stops taking the drug it can become problematic... after all, i believe something like only 5% of heroin addicts can stay sober over the course of a year. you should offer her any support you can (unconditional love wouldn't hurt either)

  • i've never heard of a drug that can stop the craving for heroin but there is a drug that stops the effects that heroin gives you.so taking heroin on top of this drug is a waste of time.its supposed to stop the person wanting to do herion.its called subutex.its a little white pill that you place under the tongu and let it dissolve.gets into bloodstrean faster through the veins under tongue.i was put on this but it can have side effects of messing up blood pressure,so was taken off and put back on methadone.

Methadone and buprephine (maybe misspelled) are some of the best treatments out there, as far as medication goes for heroin.
