The old pills have no "edges" and are imprinted with "SU" on one side. The other side is solid red - no imprint.

The new pills have "edges" and carry an imprint of "WL80" in dark ink on one side and a stamped (no ink) "PE" on the other.

I've tried both and the old Sudafed works much better than the new at clearing up my sinus earaches. In fact, the new PE pills don't seem to help at all.

The old Sudaphed pills were based on pseudoephedrine; an OTC medication that has recently come under increasing government restrictions because of its role in the illegal manufacture of methamphetamines.

Although it still requires no prescription, pharmacies have been required to keep it behind the counter, to limit how much of it you can buy at a time, and generally to make it more difficult and less convenient to obtain it.  This certainly cannot be good for the sales of such products.

As a result, the manufacturers are phasing out pseudoephedrine and substituting other ingredients which are not subject to these new restrictions.
