  • The French were very bitter with Prussia over the loss of Alsace and Lorraine (Provinces of France up to 1871) during the Franco Prussian war of 1870-1871. The Prussian Army that year advanced on Paris and were fought back by the French to the last man in a violent bloody battle that culminated in the occupation of these two french provinces. France were looking for any means or reason to regain their lands and defeat Prussia once again. The first world war offered a unique system of alliances where they could go to war with enough manpower and weapons to have a significant chance of victory. If you add the growing nationalism in both countries to growing colonialism in Africa, there was a continous race to be better than each other on the International stage. When Britain signed the entente cordiale in 1904, it gave France an opportunity to step up its plans for the repatriation of Alsace and Lorraine. When the war ended, the French took back the provinces and heavily punished Prussia for its actions. When Prime minister Clemenceau died during the Interwar years, his famous quote was 'Bury me standing up, facing Germany!' Hope that helps.
  • (A very simple explaination) WWI was created because of a system of alliances. France had a deal to go to war with anyone that was at war with Russia and Russia had a deal to war with anyone that was at war with Bosnia. They all feel in line like dominos.
