Are the "Three Storms" from Big Trouble in Little China based on actual Chinese myth or were they created for the movie?

I've read a great deal about Chinese mythology and never came across anything similar to them. So I imagine they were created just for the movie. Thunder and lightning are synonymous with each other in the Chinese culture. Thunder is produced by Duke Lei, while lightning and clouds are produced by his assistance. Rain is associated with Chinese dragons. Now that I think about it, the three almost seem like they are knockoffs of characters from an old, yet popular Chinese comic book called "Fung Wan." Some of the characters are named Wind, Cloud, Frost, etc, and have elemental martial arts powers. They made a wire-fu flick about this back in the 1990's called "The Storm Riders."

That movie was so bad I never even thought about it but now it does make me wonder.

I saw it on cable a few weeks back, and I wonder why it wasn't nominated for an academy award for Best Comedy. I found it hilarious! :) Do you think the Three Storms were as rare as a Chinese female with Green eyes?
