Question

Help answer this question below.

I have a radioshack audio output transformer, and i assume it can be used for amplification, but how? i tried just wiring it up straight, both ways, but it didn't do anything but get quieter. can someone tell me how to do it?

Audio Output Transformers are most often use in vacuum tube amplifiers to match high impedance (tubes) to 8 or 16 ohm speakers. The Transformers primaries range from 600 to more than 10,000 Ohms. Very well designed OPTs such as Lundahl or James have very good frequency response over the audible spectrum or 20Hz to 20kHz.

Interstage transformers may be used in amplifiers between a transistor (low voltage) source and a following tube stage. This can increase the voltage but it does not produce gain. Only an active device (transistor or vacuum tube) can amplify the signal.

Transformers do not amplify. They change the ratio between voltage and current at the cost of (hopefully) only a slight loss in power from one side to the other. Another way of putting this is that they change the impedance from one side to the other, so that, for example, you could convert a low impedance (and therefore high current, low voltage) source to a high impedance output (low current, high voltage) output.
    And vice versa.

Audio transformers with a coil winding ratio of 1 to 1, don't change the impedance at all, and just isolate one side from the other. They are useful for eliminating DC currents from a source to an output, which can be hazardous and can cause other audio problems.
