  • Hm. I always assumed it meant "Spelling is correct", as sort of a sign to the reader and the editor that the original document contained that error.
  • Let's say I'm quoting something from wikipedia and I noticed they spelled "Jupitur" like that, incorrectly. If I'm going to give you a 100% accurate quote, I need to give it to you with mistakes and all, but just so you don't think it was ME who made the mistake I would put [sic] right after the mistake. As for the origin, that's latin. My favorite theory is that it is short for "Sicut Erat Principio" or "As it was in the beginning" which would basically be what it actually meant (As it was in the original text)
