We dream about what is on our minds although we sometimes don't realize it because often what we dream about is symbolic of something else. So in theory yes music can affect our dreams.

When I was younger my mother used to play music early in the morning and the music would often float into my dreams whilst I was still asleep and affect what was in my dreams- often someone would be singing in the dream, but sometimes the beat and pace of the song would affect the rhythm of the dream, or the lyrics would affect the action. So yes, definetly to that extent.

Music has really never given me any ideas or dreams. music has always given me good memories of the past, through association.

I play piano. Occaisionally I have music-related dreams (like playing on stage with the J. Geils Band and not being able to remember the chords to 'Angel is the Centerfold'! -- very embarrassing). I'm sure music, like any area of life, participates in the dreaming process, but that's not the same as "dictating" the dreams. Its not such a direct and only cause.

I love all kinds of music, both playing and listening. I've noticed that over the last few years, as I go through different phases of music, that my ideas, moods and attitude changes depending on the kind of music I listen to or play. I really do believe that a lot of how we think, what we believe and how we act are determined largely by the music we expose ourselves to. As far as scientific evidence of this, however, I am not sure.

I think that everything about our environment dictates or affects our dreams and ideas. Music is so deeply rooted in our souls...so why not?
-
Most likely. I think that the plot of a song could show up many years in the future as the plot for a dream, or subconciously influence something that you are working on at the time.
