Insects are our biggest competitor for food. Mosquitoes can spread diseases such as malaria, yellow fever, dengue fever and West Nile virus. Tsetse flies spread sleeping sickness. Lice suck human blood and can cause sores, which if left untreated can become infected which may lead to blood poisoning. Cockroaches spread germs and can short circuit electrical equipment with the mucous they produce. Several species of beetles, aphids, caterpillars, bugs, locust, and grasshopper eat our crops. Screw worm flies lay their eggs in the wounds of farm animals and pets. Horseflies and black flies suck blood and have painful bites, which can become infected Killer bees, nuff said. Silverfish and firebrats eat old books. Houseflies spread germs and spoil meat by laying eggs in it. Many people are hospitalized or killed by an allergy to bee or wasp venom. Termites cause more damage than fire on an annual basis.

Some insects like gnats or midges bite...female mosquitos are similar and horse flies and stable flies bite horses and humans by jabbing their hard mouth parts into the skin and sucking blood causing an infection. http://somethingscrawlinginmyhair.com/2009/07/25/horse-fly/ http://www.idph.state.il.us/envhealth/pcbitingflies.htm

Depends which insects. There are many insects that are harmful to us - see Mastodon's answer. Then again, without bees most humans would probably die. House flies spread disease BUT without their maggots, corpses would rot slowly for months or years, continuously spreading disease.
