  • Negative (but not bankruptcy) info stays on your credit report for seven years. Credit reporting agencies cannot by law report charge-offs that are more than seven years old. I am telling you this because not all credit agencies report the same information. You have to check all three to see if it is on one of them. It is weird for info that is not 7 yrs old to be dropped off your report. But if you check all 3 and nothing is on there...tell them to prove it IS yours. Where are they getting their information if it is not on your report? You could call the phone service provider and ask for back records and if they too cannot provide info...I would ignore this law office.
  • Thank you. When I first spoke to the Law Firm/Coll Agency, (they called me and wouldn't tell me what the call was about until I answered a list of questions-verify the last 4 digits of my soc, how much I make, where I work, is my car paid off, where do I bank, etc...) I guess, because I was scared, I answered. I told them that I didn't know what it was. They asked if I thought my ID was stolen, and I said, "I guess. I don't know." That's when they told me that I had to prove it wasn't mine and to file a police rep. I then received a letter from them stating that they 'rec'd my claim of dispute on grounds that you believe your ID was stolen ...' It also had all of these forms of affidavits to fill out and send back with a police report. I have 30 days to respond. After awhile, I remembered that I had contested this some years ago and one credit agency found it not to be mine and removed it. I even got a letter stating so (although now I can't find it). I just checked all 3 credit agencies and it's not on any of them. some friends are telling me to ignore it, others are saying to fill out the paperwork and send it back. Another told me to request from them everything that they have in their file on me. I guess I could send a letter requesting the cell phone contract. Wouldn't the person's signature be on it?
