  • The first electron shell can only hold two electrons. Helium's two valence electrons are it's only electrons, so it completely fills one electron shell.
  • The octet rule doesn't kick in until atomic number 3 (lithium) & higher. Hydrogen and Helium have only an S orbital with room for 2 electrons.
