  • The process of getting gas and other handy chemicals from crude oil is a type of fractional distillation. Crude oil is a big jumble of chemicals, which are all 'fractions' of the whole thing. The way to separate these fractions is to heat up the jumble and condense each fraction as it boils. Low-boiling fractions like propane and butane biol first and as soon as the gas hits the condensor, it's cooled down and distilled off as a liquid. I do hope this makes sense - it's tricky to explain without a diagram!!
