Question

Help answer this question below.

I bought a dress for a wedding and I will never wear it again. I'm thinking of having it made into a shirt and a skirt. Can this be done, and how much would it approximately cost to do?

Of course it can be done, but the cost will depend on the seamstress doing it. Depending where you live, the cost will be relative as to whether you have just one in town (expensive) or many (more reasonable to get your business).

Some people only do hems and alterations, and will have limited skills forming a new outfit out of your dress. This lack of designing knowledge might mean they actually destroy your dress in the process, so you've got to be very careful in your selection. Be realistic in your quest, have pictures of what you think you want, or sketches, to show what you want and to see if it's possible.

Other things to consider that won't be as hard for your average seamstress: Make several fancy bed pillows; using another backing (fake fur) make a throw for bed corner or chaise lounge; baby christening gown or first communition dress; wedding ring pillow for your child's wedding (many years away!); use odd pieces of the fabric as a border in wedding picture frames for a sentimental touch.

If you're determined to go through with having an outfit made, get references. Ask family, friends, and co-workers. Check with your dry cleaners to see if they can recommend a seamstress who could handle the job. Do not give the dress to just anyone, ask them to show you their work, cause you don't want them to be overwhelmed but unable to admit it and then ruin your dress entirely.

Then finally, if it's not that important, cut a bit of fabric from the hidden hem for the memory and sell the dress. In the end, you might wish you'd never bothered, cause it's very likely you might not ever wear the new outfit cause it's fit isn't right or it isn't what you hoped it would be.

Have fun! Oh, and Best Wishes to the Bride to be!

Yes, it can be altered to make a totally new, but still elegant suit. You loved your wedding gown/dress, or you wouldn't have bought it in the first place. You might think about having it dyed black for a dressy evening two-piece outfit. I've seen it done, and it was lovely...and frugal! Good luck and congratulations!
