I don't think it is a matter of how many they drink, I don't think most alcoholics have a quota to meet but how strong the urge is to drink and the symptoms they experience when they do not drink such at DT's is what qualifies one as a true alcoholic.

its not how much a person drinks, its the physical and mental addiction that gets them classified as an alcoholic. and like any addiction, its a bitch beating it.

'Tis not quanitity. You can be an alcoholic if you HAVE to have a couple of glasses of wine EVERY evening... If you ONLY binge drink on weekends... If you like to get "sloshed" 2-3 times a month... I knew a COUPLE of guys who were fully functional, but drank a 24-pack of canned beer a day. I'd call them alcoholic. Knew another guy who drank SCOPE because he was working, and it provided enough for him to keep working without giving him alcohol breath. If you THINK you're an alocholic, you probably are.

It really has nothing to do with the amount consumed...per the DSM-IV quantity is not a qualifier for a diagnosis of either alcohol dependance or alcohol abuse. Someone could become an alcoholic drinking only one drink per day, other may drink a bottle of wine and not meet the critera for diagnosis. What does need to happen for a diagnosis comes down to impairment...when the use of alcohol negatively effects aspects of your life (such as school, work relationships, legal problems etc) then, you may meet critera for a diagnosis.

Its when you drink to live instead of having that once in awhile drink, or weekend party ... Its when you wake up and you have know idea where you are, who your with and wonder when its time to start drinking again Its when nothing is more important than getting that next drink Its when its doesn't matter how may people your hurt, how much pain you cause, when is the next drink Its when you have been to prison so many times, for DUI,beating up the wife, losing your kid, driving with out a lic. just one more BEER can't hurt right This is the face of an alcoholic, because nothing becomes more important to them than that next drink, not themselves, their family's nor any pain they cause to any one, all they see is that next drink, and funny thing is there is no age limit here, rich, poor all the same, their hiding from something. I have nephew who had thrown his life away, I've seen him over and over, I have a young man I've known all his life same way, age 37 looks 50 headed for hell.

It's not how much you drink that makes you an alcoholic, it's the dependence you have for it.

It's not how many bottles you consume. It's getting wasted because you are do not like being sober. I knew someone who would spend his whole paycheck at the bar every Friday and not have enough left to feed the kids. The kids had to rely on their own gardens and shooting wildlife for meat. "Dad" (not mine) just was never sober enough out side of his job to provide for the kids. He would often come home drunk and start raging at the family. The children would destroy his alcohol and he would hide it. When he was drunk some of the children would drive four stakes in to the ground and tie his appendages to them and leave him locked out side until he was sober enough to be untied in the morning. That is a true drunk, that is a true story.
