Some advice, dont give in to the beggars outside the bus stations that you are laid over at. Word gets around that you are easy, if you give one some change they will all come to you. Dont believe the old scam "I just need $5 to get my ticket to wherever." It is a load of crap. Stay inside the larger stations and find a seat close to the ticket agent if possible. If you get off for ten minutes at a rest stop, put a book or something in your seat before you get off. Preferably something with your name on it. If you are a pot smoker, NEVER, EVER take a smoke with a stranger, you dont know what they have laced it with. Or where there hands have been. Remember, people from all walks of life ride buses. Buses are good inexpensive means for transportation, that is why there are lots of rif-raf that ride them. Be friendly, but think about what you say before you say it as to not give out important information. With your question I am assuming you are inexperienced to riding buses cross country. Just want you to be safe. Hope you have a great trip.

A Game Boy/DS. You can pick up a GBA for pretty cheap these days. Grab one and a good RPG, and you'll be set for the trip.

An empty notebook, pens, colored pencils, etc.

    1. Make up stories about people you come across
    2. Write poetry
    3. Jot down names of places that interested you (never know when you'll be back)
    4. Draw (even if you don't know how)
    5. Make lists (likes/dislikes, goals, tv shows, people, CDs, anything)
    6. Write your biography.
    7. Make swirly marks on a page as you look out the window

Basically, fill pages. Take a look back at it a couple weeks later and you'll see how much everything that you put in there reveals about you. It's an exercise I use ever couple years to gauge growth in my life. It's fun, fills the time, and doesn't take up a lot of space.

Fiction. Novels. The books you read during your trip will forever remind you of your journey.

First I have some questions for you.

Why are you taking a bus across the country? Are you on some sort of pilgrimage? Many people take a pilgrimage to see the Dalai Lama.

Also why would you say you have an mp3 player but then in ( ) say you don't actually have it but are buying one? You should have just said you were buying one straight off, and saved us the reading time.

    Now for your answer...

The Dalai Lama says: There is no greater pleasure than oneself. And a rubik's cube.

    - A portable DVD player with some DVDs, CDs, and earplugs. A laptop would probably do.
    - I'd bring my Sprint modem.
    - Some books
    - A pad and some pens for taking notes
    - A digital camera

That would keep me plenty busy.

Buy some new cds, you can get into some great music on your trip. Everytime I listen to Korn I think of Amsterdam.

Some books by your favorite author, cd player and your favorite cds, crossword/word search puzzle, and anything other thing that brings comfort for you. I always carry my pillow with me. It makes a great table in your lap, as well as using for those times when you can't hold your eyes open.
