On the periodic table, what is the significance of the S, P, D, F sections? What are these categories for?

They are electron orbitals. An s orbital is like a sphere , a p orbital is like 8 , but i dont know what d and f look like , their shape is too complicate. :) Every element has something like identity , in which s p d f orbitals have a major role.
