  • "Not being first" does not mean "being last". There is some crazy idea that being overtaken implies going backwards. If I overtake you doing 70 when you are doing 60, that does not imply you are suddenly going to find yourself back home again. If other countries overtake America, it just meant that America is getting richer slower than they are, not that America is going to get poorer. Anyway, that is not going to happen. What may be going to happen is that Chinese GDP is going to overtake American GDP. Which meant that the total of all the money earned by all the Chinese is a going to exceed the total of all the money earned by Americans. But there are five times as many Chinese as Americans - so it means that the Chinese have reached 1/5 as rich, each, as Americans. What kind of a disaster is that? But, some cry, they are growing so much faster - if they grow at the same rate for X years they will overtake. True - but it is easy to play catchup. It is easy to double the income of a poor man - it is much harder to double the income of a fairly rich one. As they catch up with America, their growth rates will fall.
  • The worst thing that could happen to America is NOT to lose it's standing as the richest or most powerful country... on the contrary, that would probably provide a useful antidote to our tendency toward arrogance. No, the worst thing that could happen to America would be for us to lose the values that made us worthwhile -- a concern for justice, a love of freedom, an openness toward others, being the "melting pot" of disparate cultures, and having a commitment to helping those in need. Those are values worthy of the label "American". Our downfall is our tendency to isolate from the rest of the world... to think that we are SO special that we need not listen to anyone else, refusing to learn from other cultures, refusing to learn from our own past mistakes, refusing to acknowledge when we've been wrong. Whether or not we're #1 in any particular area is pretty much irrelevant. What matters is that we participate as valuable contributors to a world that works for all of humanity. If we do that, we're golden for the future.
  • I think you're right to be concerned, but there is much we can do. The US has slipped to 9th in education, if we don't want to lose more of our international standing, education is perhaps the single most important thing we can work on. Vote for leaders who are pro-education. Encourage your kids to get the best education they can, and help your local schools in any way possible. http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2005/09/13/national/main838207.shtml
  • America is doomed and our decline is obvious. We are doing everything wrong and we will eventually fall and become a third world country. I am sorry to say this but I am quite certain our best days are behind us.

  • Fire your congress member. Fire them all. Get new people in there, because even a random shuffle of new people would be better than the clowns we have now. They're NOT representing the people anymore. They're a runaway train with their own agenda, and the Constitution doesn't mean anything to our government anymore, since they break it daily. Our freedom and liberty is what made this country great, and without the Constitution, they will be long gone. http://blowoutcongress.com/
  • I do not see this country is going down at least next 50-100 years. So you will be fine. But every up there is a down. So someday it will happen.
  • Even when America is no longer the world's leading power, it will still be up there among the elite. Look at Britain, a 100 years ago we where a superpower had a massive empire (1/4 of the world), biggest navy in the world, and we had held that position for about 100 years. But countries like the USA, Germany, Japan where all catching us up and over the next 30-40 years we where overtaken. Our decline from superpower status was accelerated by 2 world wars, but would have still happened over the course of the 20th Century in a changing world. My point is, is that the US is in a stronger position then Britain was, (bigger population, Geographically secure, wealthier etc) also unlikely to fight 2 world wars, and therefore any decline will be gradual. Also look at Britain, we are no longer number 1, but we are the 4th biggest economy in the world, have nukes, have power and influence across the world, and this will be the same for America even when it is no longer number 1. Finally, i can't see the US becoming a third world country, if it does the whole world will have gone down the tube by then. Don't worry pal.
  • America will soon be a Moslem colony. The up side is that Islam will protect America from Chinese invasion.
