You will need the computer to be on as it opens the connection to the printer. If your printer is able to, you can connect it straight to your router using a eathernet (CAT 5) cable but it needs to be a network printer to be able to do this. Other than that i would say that you will need to connect your laptop to the printer via a USB cable when you want to print etc.
