The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, (Proverbs 1:7.) A couple of others have suggested this by saying "death." This says it better; in that this is the "beginning of Knowledge."
Then this Knowledge becomes a great comfort and that fear diminishes and life becomes better.

Probably death scares people the most. That's why lots of people become religious. Fear of a painful or suffering death is pretty scary too. Fear of losing one's sight to blindness, of losing one's mind to Alzheimer's, fear of losing a child to illness or accident/injury, fear of losing a spouse to illness, death, adultery, these are the real fears even of the people who gave silly or dumb answers to this question.

I'm afraid the depression that comes with the emotional anguish I repress is paralyzing me, keeping me from interacting in the real world. I'm letting my life slip away for fear of being embarrassed by what people will think of me if they find out how mixed up and sad I am inside. I'm missing most of the opportunity to love my wife and kids because I'm hiding from myself. I'm afraid of meeting new people so I hide in my computer on AB instead of getting out there with real people.

I don't know about the whole world, I just know about what I see and hear. The crushing economy and political apathy have caused the demise of families.
I know 'someone' wrote a book called "It Takes a Village" and how important they are to building character and morals. Where are the villages?
Dual income is the norm. Who's raising our kids? Between nursing homes and daycare do we have any family time anymore? Frankly, I believe these changes have been forced on us by our long struggling economy.
I also believe that without faith, little impact can be made. The fact that Church attendance or 'Worship' is at an all time low scares me very badly.

it has been loneliness that scares me most in the world lately... each and every day i wake up terrified of that and do not know how to fight it. i am afraid of being left alone with nobody to relay on, of being in a crowd of people who do not care about me, of being invinsible to the world, left alone by myself, of people forgetting who i am, for people not trying to uderstand me...
i realize how wrong it is to be so dependent on other people so much and i would love to be able to stop that but right now it scared me so much!! :-(
