It is like his badge of office with his crozier
He is the representative of Saint Peter here on earth . he can wear what the heck he likes as long as it is traditional.:)
didn't you know? that's where he keeps all the gold from the church. poor man must have a ton of cash weighing him down.
Because he for some reason provides the birds with a waste disposal plan.
To divert attention toward his baldness. Most popes are elected when they're old.... ;-)
It might be the symbol of a crown, after all, he is the successor of Peter.
because it no good to wear a cowboy hat, no ventilation on top.
None of the other answers are correct. The mitre, along with the crozier and the episcopal ring, is a symbol of the office of bishop. Bishops, including the pope, wear mitres to signify that the are bishops just like a king would wear a crown to symbolize that he is the king. The pope used to wear a special hat called the Papal Tiara (read more about that at http://enwp.org/Papal_Tiara ), but Pope Paul VI ended that tradition and opted to just wear a normal mitre like every other bishop as a sign of humility and humbleness.
