  • Naserath (please ignore my terrible spelling). Middle name: of
  • "Jesus" was a common name at the time, because "Jesus" is just "Joshua" in a different language. (YehoSHUa in Hebrew, Y'shua in Aramaic, Yeysous in Greek, Yesu in Latin--Jesus in English.) It was so common that you'd have to distinguish one Jesus from another. Inside Nazareth, where He grew up, he would be called "Jesus Josephson" or "the carpenter's son" or, later, "the carpenter." Outside of Nazareth they would call him Jesus of Nazareth. They didn't have "last names" like we have. The closest they came to it would be the Swedish and Slavic practice of calling you the son of (your father's first name). I live in Eastern Europe and most people just call me Roger Johnson--they don't even know my last name, or use it except on official or formal occasions.
  • The name Jesus (Gr., I-e-sous') corresponds to the Hebrew name Jeshua (or, in fuller form, Jehoshua), meaning "Jehovah Is Salvation". The name itself was not unusual, many men being so named in that period. For this reason persons often added further identification, saying, "Jesus the Nazarene." see(Mark10:47;Acts 2:22) Christ is from the Greek Khri-stos, the equivalent of the Hebrew Ma-shi'ach (Messiah), and means "Anointed One." Whereas the expression "anointed one" was properly applied to others before Jesus, such as Moses, Aaron, and David see (Hebrews 11:24-26; Le 4:3; 8:12; 2Sa 22:51), the position, office, or service to which these were anointed only prefigured the superior position, office, and service of Jesus Christ. Jesus is therefore preeminently and uniquely "the Christ, the Son of the living God". The person who became known as Jesus Christ did not begin life here on earth. He himself spoke of his prehuman heavenly life. (see John 3:13; 6:38, 62; 8:23, 42, 58). The outpouring of holy spirit at the time of Jesus' baptism marked the time of his becoming in actual fact the Messiah, or Christ, God's Anointed One.
  • He really never had one. Please remember that He was born in a time when last names really weren't common. He was simply known as Jesus of Nazareth during the time of His ministry, but as people began to realize that He was the Savior, they began calling him Christ Jesus, where "Christ" is simply a term that means "Savior" or "Redeemer", both of which are very commonly used in Christian religions today. This was evetually turned around to "Jesus the Christ", then as language became more condensed, so did His name. His name is also one of the word contractions found in Spanish (Jesucristo)!
  • It doesn't really matter, does it?
  • Surnames were not yet assigned at the time of Jesus Christ. But Jesus' last name would have been Of Nazereth and/or Son of Joseph. In Hebrew or course.
  • In the ancient Hebrew world it was common to adopt the name of the child's father as their surname. So it is likely that Jesus would have been referred to as, something along the lines of, Yeshuah Ben Joseph which means Jesus the son of Joseph.

  • At the time of Jesus, Jewish people did not have surnames, but patronyms ( a component of a personal name based on the name of one's father.) In Hebrew, Jesus was Yeshua, and, because his father was supposed by everyone to be Joseph (Yosef or Yosep in the Aramaic that was spoken by the common people at the time). So Jesus was called Yeshua ben Yosef, which means Jesus son of Joseph.
