I don't know about any other states but if you pick up any phone in California and dial 211 its a info line for any kind of question that you can have about these subjects. They are extremely helpful.

Legally, almost anything you can do with an attorney you can also do on you own. An attorney is not something special, they are just a virtual you with a much better understanding of the law. From a practical standpoint, it is much more difficult without an attorney. Your best bet is to go to the general information desk at the court house and start asking questions.

In Florida you could file a form in order to be reviewed for a pre-qualified for an expunged/sealed felony. You don't need an attorney, you could go to the court house and do the process your self saving anywhere from $500-2000.
