Legally, almost anything you can do with an attorney you can also do on you own. An attorney is not something special, they are just a virtual you with a much better understanding of the law.
From a practical standpoint, it is much more difficult without an attorney. Your best bet is to go to the general information desk at the court house and start asking questions.
I don't know about any other states but if you pick up any phone in California and dial 211 its a info line for any kind of question that you can have about these subjects. They are extremely helpful.
In Florida you could file a form in order to be reviewed for a pre-qualified for an expunged/sealed felony. You don't need an attorney, you could go to the court house and do the process your self saving anywhere from $500-2000.
