Selena..
John Fitzgerald Kennedy
Marilyn Monroe. 1962.
I think there were others earlier, but they don't come to mind so easily.
I'm not as old as gtravels, but I do remember hearing about James Dean in 1955. If I have to go like he did, juicing myself in a Porsche would be a class act. He took method acting to the extreme when he checked out.
I remember people talking about Martin Luther King and Bobby Kennedy (both in 1968) when they were killed, but the first death that really made an impression on me was Judy Garland (1969). I couldn't believe "Dorothy" from the Wizard of Oz was dead.
The first one that I can think of is JFK but I'm sure that I must have heard about somebody else famous passing away during the almost 17 years that I had been alive hitherto.
Ah OK, now I remember hearing about Clark Gable's passing in November, 1960.
I might have heard about James Dean's death in September, 1955 but I can't honestly say that I have any memory of hearing about it then.

I remember my Grandmother watching the funeral procession for Lyndon B. Johnson.
JFK. I was in first grade and remember watching the burial on TV....but I don't remember the famous image of his son giving a military salute while the hearse passed on front of him.
Princess Diana died 2 weeks after my dad died. I felt so sorry for William and Harry to be going through the loss of a parent as I was. My given name is also Diana. To answer your question, President Kennedy is the first famous person and was Our President, that I remember dying; Caroline and John-John being the same ages as my younger brother, Johnnie and I.
G'day Hdsquaver,

President John F. Kennedy, when I was a child.
Yeah, Princess Diana for me too.
Let me see if I can manage to say this in a manner that does not make me appear to be some cold hearted uncaring bitch..During my life I am certain that many famous people have died, but, they were not important to me..they were famous..let the world mourn for the famous..I spent my time mourning the average.. I feel for anyone that faces a loss..but to grieve someone simply for celebrity..is pretty pointless..the average person..the one giving to the world around them..without need for the limelight..I mourn for them :)

The most famous one I can remember, JFK. Then, Walt Disney.

According to her butler, Princess Diana's mother ""called the Princess a whore and she said that she was messing around with f****** Muslim men and she was disgraceful and said some very nasty things". Agree with mum or not?
