The first celeb I can clearly remember dying would be John Wayne. I'm sure there were others, but that would be the first time I cared as a lil kid.

JFK. I was in first grade and remember watching the burial on TV....but I don't remember the famous image of his son giving a military salute while the hearse passed on front of him.

The first one that I can think of is JFK but I'm sure that I must have heard about somebody else famous passing away during the almost 17 years that I had been alive hitherto. Ah OK, now I remember hearing about Clark Gable's passing in November, 1960. I might have heard about James Dean's death in September, 1955 but I can't honestly say that I have any memory of hearing about it then.

I remember people talking about Martin Luther King and Bobby Kennedy (both in 1968) when they were killed, but the first death that really made an impression on me was Judy Garland (1969). I couldn't believe "Dorothy" from the Wizard of Oz was dead.

I'm not as old as gtravels, but I do remember hearing about James Dean in 1955. If I have to go like he did, juicing myself in a Porsche would be a class act. He took method acting to the extreme when he checked out.

I remember my Grandmother watching the funeral procession for Lyndon B. Johnson.

JFK was the first time that anyone that famous had been assassinated. I vaguely remember Marilyn Monroe being found dead before that..but JFK really sticks in my mind. It really was the end of Camelot.

Albert Einstein, though I really wasn't old enough to know who he was. I just remember the talk. Also, Joseph Stalin, though he would probably fall under "infamous" rather than famous. Both died in 1953. I was in first grade.

JFK when I was only a few years old - I remember the pain and sadness that came over my parents and siblings though I did not understand at the time.

John lennon was the famous person. I remember many, and many made me sad, but Lennon was like part of my history, my memories. Not counting he was a musical genius and is still missed by millions:(

I'm not very old but I can remember being upset as a child that John Belushi from Saturday Night Live passed away. I have a thing for comedy.

I first remember the assassination of JFK, when I was 14. Everything else after that seemed rather insignificant until the +/- 3,000 that were lost on 9/11. I think those are now the most famous to have died in my lifetime.

Vaguely remember Elvis dying, was pretty young then, and John Lennon. Most famous deaths that I was really old enough to understand though, was when the space shuttle Challenger blew up and 7 astronauts died.

Princess Diana died 2 weeks after my dad died. I felt so sorry for William and Harry to be going through the loss of a parent as I was. My given name is also Diana. To answer your question, President Kennedy is the first famous person and was Our President, that I remember dying; Caroline and John-John being the same ages as my younger brother, Johnnie and I.

Roald Dahl. He was my favourite writer as a child and I was still into his books at the age of 12 when he died. I got to meet him at a book signing once, he was pretty old then. I was really devastated that there would be no more childrens books written by him.

Let me see if I can manage to say this in a manner that does not make me appear to be some cold hearted uncaring bitch..During my life I am certain that many famous people have died, but, they were not important to me..they were famous..let the world mourn for the famous..I spent my time mourning the average.. I feel for anyone that faces a loss..but to grieve someone simply for celebrity..is pretty pointless..the average person..the one giving to the world around them..without need for the limelight..I mourn for them :)
