Is there any reason, besides phonetic laziness, that most people pronounce Newfoundland as "New-Finland"?

I say new'fund'land. Most provinces have their own accent.

I'm with "C.D.", I've only heard it pronounced "NEW-fund-lund".

One of those names that is spelled a little different than it is spelled. Local custom makes Norfolk, NE pronounce nor-fork, Beatrice as B-at-trist and Saline as sa-lean.
