How do I find the car's model year by looking at the number plate?

Where do you live? In some countries the year is not on the plate and in others it is.

In the United States , the year is designated by the tenth digit in the 17 digit vin number as of 1981. J=1989 k=1990 L=1991 m=1992 n=1993 p=1994 r=1995 s=1996 t=1997 v=1998 w=1999 y=2000 1=2001 2=2002 3=2003 and I belive that it will progress naturally from there. I know that this is a little wordy, and may not even apply for outside of the United States. Just trying to help.
