Since the infancy of the Church, Mary has been referred to as Theotokos (as made official at the council of Ephesus in 431). The term literally means God-bearer or the one who gives birth to God. This doen't mean that Mary existed before God, or that Mary is greater than God. The term merely stresses the fact that Mary's son Jesus is one person who is both God and man, and Mary was the mother of this person.

If you wish to learn about this subject which is fascinating I suggest you start reading the New Testament and once well understood read the Old Testament, in this order. The same as the relationship he has or wants with each and everyone of us. HE created her and therefore she is or was HIS child. HE used her because of her lineage and relationship to David. HE used her body as a vessel to carry baby JESUS here on earth to be born a KING. HE saw she was pure and worthy of being the one to honored in such a way. She also was part of the miracle....being that she was a virgin and so willing to please GOD. HE has a plan for each and everyone of us and wants to use us in HIS great plan to do as great a miracle as Mary did.

The same as His relationship with us. She is like us in that she is one of His children and He chose her to do His will; carry the Son of man in her womb for she was pure and untouched. There is no mother of heaven or queen of heaven. She is given no significance in that she is not anyone more important than you or I. She is not to be given worship as there is only One God. That is an area where the Catholic religion and I disagree on beliefs as the Word teaches me I am not to pray to her. She can offer no mercy or give no good word on our behalf. She holds no power and cannot hear your prayers. Only God. I agree. No where in the OT canon (Protestant) did prophecy ever make the claim of the virgin bearing the child being a person more holy than man or closer to God than man. There is no support in the NT canon that tells us that Mary was greater than anyone else outside of how the Father chose to use her in his sovereign plan. The Roman Catholic Church chooses to believe this and it may have had its origin around 700 A.D. This doctrine was dogmatically and infallibly defined by Pope Pius XII on 1 November 1950 in his Apostolic Constitution Munificentissimus Deus. Quite simply, Catholics believe this. Protestants do not. I choose to not believe it as I do not think there is good enough supporting evidence.

The relation between God and Mary is the same relation between God and Abraham, God and Esther, God and Peter, God and Martha. In other words Mary was a servant of God. (God) Jesus needed to be made of flesh so He can fulfill the tasks that God ( the Father) gave Him. Why did God choose Mary to conceive Jesus? Because God promised King David that the Messiah will be a descendant of him. When Jews talk about descendant, they look at the male descendants. Joseph is a descendant of King David. So this is the reason why Joseph's wife was chosen to be the woman who shall give life to Jesus our Saviour.
