i would say both...unfortunately our advancement has come at a price. those concerned throughout history who were in charge, had no foresight though. or maybe just assumed the attitudes of many...which is 'if its not gonna happen in my lifetime, i dont care'. or maybe the environment suffers because mans biggest vice is his inability to be considerate and take his focus off of money.

I say it contributed more to the development of mankind. Yes, there has been some environmental impact, but nature is far more resilient than we give it credit for. Places like Love Canal and Chernobyl have come back from environmental disasters. Future technology will be cleaner than today's tech. That's been the case since humanity first started using fuels. As we move from fossil fuels to nuclear, hydrogen and other non-fossil fuels, the air will get cleaner and mankind will progress, just as we did when we switched from wood to coal. The fossil fuel era is a stage of development. One which is nearing its end.
