How come there are different ways to spell Sphinx/Sphynx? Which one is the correct spelling?

I think it might be that with an i is the english spelling, and with a y is the direct translation from egption.(I think)

so to conclude RFlaggs answer sphynx would actually be the right spelling.The i is used b/c of novice translators arguing it should be translated completely into English.Wich according to guidelines,would be incorrect. ^^
