Hurt- Johnny Cash
Angel Flying To Close To The Ground. By Willie Nelson reminds me of when my baby was waiting for the heart that never came.
At This moment, Billy Vera and the Beaters.
Lyrics:
AT THIS MOMENT
Words & Music by Billy Vera
What did you think
I would do At This Moment
When you're standing before me
With tears in your eyes
Trying to tell me that you
Have found you another
And you just don't love me no more
What did you think
I would say At This Moment
When I'm faced with the knowledge
That you just don't love me
Did you think I would curse you
Or say things to hurt you
Cause you just don't love me no more
Did you think I could hate you
Or raise my hands to you
Now, come on, you know me too well
How could I hurt you
When Darlin' I love you
And you know, I'd never, never hurt you
What do you think
I would give At This Moment
If you'd stay, I'd subtract
Twenty years from my life
I'd fall down on my knees
Kiss the ground that you walk on
If I could just hold you again

And to the person who rated this answer "not helpful", maybe you will either be kind enough to tell me what the saddest song I ever heard is, or shut the F*** up.
Tears In Heaven by Eric Clapton
I have two: "Tears in Heaven" by Eric Clapton, and "Vincent (Starry, Starry Night)" by Don McLean.
"He Stopped Loving Her Today" by George Jones, very sad song.
Everybody Hurts by REM
There are a lot of sad songs.. but check out
"Hate Me" by Blue October... it tells of a child who longs for the love of his mother, but feels that the choices he has made in his life has only caused her pain and therefore he stays away from her to try and protect her from his self destruction, only to stay away from her too long. In the video, she dies and all he is left with is a message of her voice on his answering machine. So many of our young people feel that they are not worthy of love. We need to let them know they are loved.. UNCONDITIONALLY and not make them feel condemned.
cats in the craddle
i sing this alot at kariokie
it reminds me my dad is close to the end of his days, in his 80's and i never really new him now we try to have a relationship
i never even new what he did in wwII
till last week
now my sons are in their mid/late 20 s
and we never see each othe and dont know each other anymore
(this song says it all, life passinfg before you know it, never getting to say i love you!)
The song "Wind beneath my wings" makes me cry. I think it's supposed to be a happy song (?) but it makes ME sad because they played it in my aunt's hospital room when she was dying. :o/ Ugh.
Also, basically any slow song about breaking up, or getting your heart broken make me sad!

Vincent- Don McLean
Bob Dylans Dream
Lyrics:
While riding on a train goin' west,
I fell asleep for to take my rest.
I dreamed a dream that made me sad,
Concerning myself and the first few friends I had.
With half-damp eyes I stared to the room
Where my friends and I spent many an afternoon,
Where we together weathered many a storm,
Laughin' and singin' till the early hours of the morn.
By the old wooden stove where our hats was hung,
Our words were told, our songs were sung,
Where we longed for nothin' and were quite satisfied
Talkin' and a-jokin' about the world outside.
With haunted hearts through the heat and cold,
We never thought we could ever get old.
We thought we could sit forever in fun
But our chances really was a million to one.
As easy it was to tell black from white,
It was all that easy to tell wrong from right.
And our choices were few and the thought never hit
That the one road we traveled would ever shatter and split.
How many a year has passed and gone,
And many a gamble has been lost and won,
And many a road taken by many a friend,
And each one I've never seen again.
I wish, I wish, I wish in vain,
That we could sit simply in that room again.
Ten thousand dollars at the drop of a hat,
I'd give it all gladly if our lives could be like that.

I'm with satine, the Johnny Cash cover of "Hurt". I think its even sadder because he died so soon after recording it.
hmm thanks for the "not useful" rating- sorry my answer to the question wasn't useful to you!!!
"wish you were here" by pink floyd, my uncles best friend played that on acoustic guitar at his funeral. and also "the river","point blank" and "the angel" by bruce springsteen
"NO SUPRISES" BY "RADIO HEAD" IT'S HAUTING, BEAUTIFLY SUNG AND ALTHOUGH THE LYRICS ARE SIMPLE, EVEN THE FIRST VERSE MANAGES TO SAY SO MUCH......
"A HEART THATS FULL UP LIKE A LANDFILL
A JOB THAT SLOWLY KILLS YOU
BRUISES THAT WON'T HEAL"
Baby Mine from the Dumbo movie.
Someone already said "Tears in Heaven" - that's not even a type of music that I like but the story behind it makes me choke up every time. SO SAD.
Another one is "Nothing Compares 2 U" sung by Sinead O'Connor. I hadn't heard this song in years, but when I listened to it recently I found it devestating. It just perfectly expresses the desolate feeling of a newly ended relationship.
Hurt - 9 Inch Nails
But the Johnny Cash version is even sadder.
Wild Horses by the Rolling Stones. Awesome sad song, and sung really good by Mazzy Star as well.
Childhood living is easy to do
The things you wanted I bought them for you
Graceless lady you know who I am
You know I can't let you slide through my hands
Wild horses, couldn't drag me away
Wild wild horses couldn't drag me away
I watched you suffer a dull aching pain
Now you decided to show me the same
No sweeping exits or off stage lines
Could make me feel bitter or treat you unkind
Wild horses, couldn't drag me away
Wild wild horses couldn't drag me away
I know I've dreamed you a sin and a lie
I have my freedom but I don't have much time
Faith has been broken tears must be cried
Let's do some living after we die
Wild horses, couldn't drag me away
Wild wild horses we'll ride them someday
Wild horses, couldn't drag me away
Wild wild horses we'll ride them some
Tears in Heaven by Eric Clapton
I actually have a few in mind, and I tried to put them in order of how they affect me.

2. Martina McBride- "Concrete Angel"
3. Sarah McLachlan & Randy Newman- "When She Loved Me"

Pure emotion in his voice
Couple spring to mind.
Brothers In Arms - Dire Straits.
Power Of Love - Jennifer Rush - played at my Grandad's funeral so obvious perosnal feelings
Yesterday - The Beatles - lovely song, simple melody
Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah - may not recognise the title but if you heard it all you would probably recognise it

"Four Dead in Ohio" - Crosby Stills Nash & Young
From the events surrounding the killing of 4 people on the Kent State University campus in May, 1970.

Really gets you thinking.
"What are you doing with the rest of your life?" sung by Dusty Springfield.
What are you doing the rest of your life?
North and south and east and west of your life?
I have only one request of your life
That you spend it all with me.
All the seasons and the times of your days.
All the nickels and the dimes of your days.
Let the reasons and the rhymes of your days.
All begin and end with me.
I want to see your face,
In every kind of light,
In fields of gold and
Forests of the night;
And when you stand before
The candles on a cake.
Oh let me be the one to hear
The silent wish you make.
Those tomorrows waiting deep in your eyes
In the world of love you keep in your eyes,
Ill awaken whats asleep in your eyes,
It may take a kiss or two..
Through all of my life..
Summer, winter, spring and fall of my life,
All I ever will recall of my life
Is all of my life with you.
Slipped Away by Avril Lavigne
I cry every time I hear it
How do you get that lonely, by Blaine Larson a country singer. (it's about suicide)
Any song sung by somebody who can't sing. That is VERY sad...
Im so lonesome I could cry...written by Hank williams
senior, BJ Thomas had a hit with it in the 70s
The silence of a falling star
lights up a purple sky
and as I wonder where you are
Im so lonesome I could cry.
Did you ever see a robin weep
when leaves begin to die?
That means hes lost the will to live
Im so lonesome I could cry
"HURT"-- JOHNNY CASH---the Trent Reznor diddy...
Gloomy sunday
I always feel sad when I hear Dust in the wind, but I don't know if it's the saddest I've heard.
I'll post the lyrics since most of you won't know the song Get out the kleenex...
In a little while from now
If I’m not feeling any less sour
I promise myself to treat myself
And visit a nearby tower
And climbing to the top
will throw myself off
In an effort to make it clear to who
Ever what it’s like when you’re shattered
Left standing in the lurch at a church
Where people saying: "My God, that’s tough
She's stood him up"
No point in us remaining
We may as well go home
As I did on my own
Alone again, naturally
To think that only yesterday
I was cheerful, bright and gay
Looking forward to but would never do
The role I was about to play
But as if to knock me down
Reality came around
And without so much, as a mere touch
Cut me into little pieces
Leaving me to doubt
Talk about God and His mercy
Or if He really does exist
Why did He desert me
and in my hour of need
I truly am indeed Alone again, naturally
It seems to me that there are more hearts
broken in the world that can’t be mended
Left unattended
What do we do? What do we do?
Alone again, naturally
Now looking back over the years
And whatever else that appears
I remember I cried when my father died
Never wishing to hide the tears
And at sixty-five years old
My mother, God rest her soul,
Couldn’t understand why the only man
She had ever loved had been taken
Leaving her to start with a heart so badly broken
Despite encouragement from me
No words were ever spoken
And when she passed away
I cried and cried all day
Alone again, naturally
Time After Time-Cyndi Lauper
Candle In The Wind probably occurs to quite a few Brits.
I don't want to miss a thing-Aerosmith...when my dad died I listened to that song a lot. Very sad song.
Faces In The Hall- Gym Class Heroes.
And not too be corny or predictable, but Amazing Grace makes me feel sad, as well.
The Titanic Song.

Totally agree with this answer - although it was originally written and performed by Nine Inch Nails
by jangobean on August 14th, 2006
I know that.
by travis bickle on August 14th, 2006
The Johnny Cash version chokes me up though (especially with the video) the Nine Inch Nail one doesn't.
by lady fuschia on August 25th, 2006
I love Johny Cash.
by RFlagg on August 27th, 2006
Johnny Cash is the greatest

by Mr. McClister on December 3rd, 2006

by Seraphim Shinobi on February 16th, 2007
+3 - totally agree. Listening to it now. It resonates with me every time.
by PrettyPirate on February 23rd, 2007
It never gets old, does it?
by travis bickle on February 24th, 2007
I prefer Trent Reznor, but it is the same song. Lol.
by Anonymous on February 25th, 2007
I totally agree 100% and the music video with him and his wife make it that much better.
by shellyg on February 28th, 2007
That song can rip my heart out. +
by Mrs.Dufresne on February 28th, 2007
i like both version a lot, which is strange for me, but i the j. cash version seems more sad for some reason.
by zee-ster on March 6th, 2007
think thats bad watch the video
by Crazed_Wiseman on March 19th, 2007
actually, i have watched the video and that likely added to the sadness. either way though, it seems more sad with j. cash.
by zee-ster on March 20th, 2007
Hurt was originally a Nine Inch Nails song that cash covered, figured i would share that if you didnt know. But i agree one of the saddest songs i've heard.
by Draven on March 21st, 2007
but cash made the song first, nine inch nails didn't make it im pretty sure
by Crazed_Wiseman on March 21st, 2007
Nine Inch Nails did make it first. It's on "The Downward Spiral".
by Anonymous on March 21st, 2007
No im 100% sure that Nine Inch Nails made it first. "The video for "Hurt", a cover of the Nine Inch Nails song, and generally recognized as 'his epitaph' [6], from American IV received particular critical and popular acclaim." - www.wikipedia.org
by Draven on March 21st, 2007
yeah, johnny cash may have been older, but he wasn't the one who came out with the song first. which reminds me of when i heard his "personal jesus" cover; i was wondering if perhaps he was the original artist who wrote it (he wasn't).
by zee-ster on March 21st, 2007
I read an article about Nine Inch Nails feeling so blessed that Cash decided to do a cover of their song. It was honor for them.
It really is amazing, the video is so emtional.
by shellyg on May 18th, 2007
i agree,the video is mindnumbing.so sad.
by joydivision84 on December 18th, 2007
that is the sign if truely good art, imo. anything that can make you feel that much, that's powerful.
by zee-ster on December 18th, 2007
I know it's like his life in a music video as if he knew he was going to die. So sad. He had the ultimate old guy voice.
by OmarFW on February 18th, 2008
I don't agree with this answer anymore. I wonder if it would piss people off if I edited it, seeing as I already got 101 points on its behalf. To do, or not to do, that is the question.
by travis bickle on February 21st, 2008
lol! that's funny satine. that happens to me sometimes, too. maybe you could just post a 2nd answer. oh, and omar - i agree with you there. although, i'm not sure about the part about him dying. i mean, he was getting up there in age... i dunno.
by zee-ster on February 22nd, 2008
Well of course it isn't true no. But that's what I got from it anyway.
by OmarFW on February 23rd, 2008
I think I'll leave it for now, zee. If I'm ever feeling especially evil, I'll edit it.
by travis bickle on February 24th, 2008
It's actually a cover of a Nine Inch Nails song. I think it's cool that Cash knew about them.
by Nablur on March 20th, 2008
Thats actually incorrect, Nine Inch Nails did the cover of Johnny Cash's song Hurt.
by Kaidou on March 20th, 2008
That's actually CORRECT. Trent Reznor wrote the song. It's on a Cash cd of cover songs. Sure, he wrote all the songs of that cd and they had all been preiously recorded by other people before Cash recorded them...ummm...okay...
by king of ellipses on March 21st, 2008
Cash also covered Soundgarden & Depeche Mode, so what?
by travis bickle on March 21st, 2008
Let's clear this up, TRENT REZNOR WROTE AND SANG THE SONG FIRST. JOHNNY CASH COVERED IT LATER BECAUSE TRENT REZNOR IS A FAN OF JOHNNY CASH.
by OmarFW on March 22nd, 2008
Johnny Cash wrote Hurt and gave it to Trent. Johnny Cask is still alive. He lives in Trent Reznor's basement.
by travis bickle on March 22nd, 2008
um, im gonna disregard that last statement.

It is originally by nine inch nails
by venial on June 21st, 2008
lol yes ty venial. It was written by trent resnor who is a fan of johnny cash (and may have been friends with him. dunno.) anyways, johnny cash did a cover of this song because of it.
seriously, to all you idiots who think you know stuff about music, don't talk about music if you don't know what your talking about.

by shadoweater on September 2nd, 2008
I know Trent Reznor wrote it, but Johnny Cash's version is the saddest.

Nine Inch Nails' version is far more gut-wrenching.

Johnny Cash makes it gut wrenching.

by shawndella on August 25th, 2009
you clearly have no taste in music!!!!
by BOOZE HOUND... nothing is nonsence on August 25th, 2009
Nonsense....I clearly have plenty of taste in music...especially in Johnny Cash....But this song was morbid. That is my opinion, not a fact. Was not trying to step on toes, I just think there could have been a better chioce of song.
by shawndella on August 25th, 2009
just playing with you lol,sad songs are often morbid
by BOOZE HOUND... nothing is nonsence on August 25th, 2009
I wouldn't go so far as to call it morbid. What makes you call it morbid? It's sad yes, but to call it morbid makes it sound like you think the song shouldn't of been written.
unless you mean the nine inch nails version, in which case i can agree with the morbid reference.
by OmarFW on August 31st, 2009
COOKIES!!! After all, there is no donut monster. Cookies utilize their surface area with sugary goodness more efficiently. Donuts take up lots of space, with far less sugar. Real estate can get expensive, so obviously cookies are superior.
by zee-ster on September 4th, 2009
well said zee-ster cookies are clearly better.
by BOOZE HOUND... nothing is nonsence on September 4th, 2009
Thanks. I'd like to add something to that last comment. Just because I think cookies are superior, does not mean that I intend to destroy the inferior desserts. (:
by zee-ster on September 4th, 2009
that's very noble of you, dont you think the donuts needs knocking down a few pegs it's getting a bit big headed.
by BOOZE HOUND... nothing is nonsence on September 4th, 2009
doughnuts arent desserts, theyre breakfast, you could never consider cookies a meal
by Capital J on September 5th, 2009
cookies can be a meal if you eat them with milk
by BOOZE HOUND... nothing is nonsence on September 6th, 2009
i guess your right, but even with milk they cant come close to the greatness of a doughnut.
by Capital J on September 7th, 2009
doughnuts dont last as long as cookies and there image has been ruined my fat cops.

donuts can also be eaten with milk. it seems weird but it is possible.
tell me, have you ever eaten a custard filled cookie? or a caramel covered cookie topped with chunks of heath bar with a fudge filling?
i think not. krispie kreme is awesome and can't be beat by some dull bland cookies.
by OmarFW on September 13th, 2009

I think cookies could totally be a meal. Then again, I've had pickles for breakfast! I'm not so big on the donuts. I think I overdosed on them years ago when I lived across from a donut shop...

by OmarFW on September 30th, 2009
Willpower. :D Plus, they go straight to my ass & I already have a nice amount of junk in that trunk! Either way, they aren't as tempting as they used to be. I had way too many in a short time frame...
by zee-ster on October 1st, 2009

by BOOZE HOUND... nothing is nonsence on November 1st, 2009
well, i will admit that a lot of the food there does suck. but the burritos are all pretty much awesome and the chalupas are the bomb. also the nachos can be good. america sure has a lot of really really disgusting fast food but taco bell is my fav out of all the crap.
by OmarFW on November 24th, 2009
taco bell is one of the few american chains that has'nt made it to the u.k yet i dont think there's any fast food i dont like lol.
by BOOZE HOUND... nothing is nonsence on November 25th, 2009
america is the fast food capital and believe me, there is some pretty digusting crap out there.
taco bell is one of the few goodies.
