  • 'Slow' and 'fast' are relative, it depends what speed everyone else is doing. To people that drive over the speed limit, someone that was doing 70mph (UK speed limit) would be slow. If they are driving slower than the people in the slow lane, then it could be because an exit is coming up. If an exit isn't coming up then they are probably just idiots.
  • I don't want to be mean, but they tend to be little old people who can't look over the steering wheel who drive so slow. That meeans they can't see which lane they are in, and old people tend to drive slow
  • I tend to be a slow driver, and usually stay in the slow lane. Though, sometimes, I'll pass a lorri and people will get impatient with me. Then they'll start passing me in the slow lane, keeping me trapped in the fast lane, and won't give me the opportunity to move back into the slow lane. Or, as someone else said, there's a turn coming up. Being as people in the fast lane are the more aggressive drivers, it's not easy to shift into the fast lane, so I need to do so well in advance so I'll be sure not to miss my turn.
  • Well in the UK, the left hand side is the slow lane.
  • I am going to absolutely love giving this answer. Do you mean slow-driving as adhering to the speed limit? Do you mean, "get the heck out of my way so i can reach top speed?" do you mean, "i am late for work and driving single in the HOV lane?" Or, do you mean persons driving 50 mph in a 70 mph zone? More information. please.
  • I drive to Indio from Ontario Ca every morning, my route is 215 miles round trip. The speed limit is 70 mph most of the way. I would be foolish to do 70 in the left lane, let alone the right lane either. Trucks pass me doing at least 85mph and cars fly passed me like I was standing still.. Then there are the Mercedes that do 65mph in the fast lane heading for Palm Springs that refuse to move over and have their friends "block" the 4 lanes adjacent to them.. can't get around them for nothing... then they slow down!! I just pull over and listen to the radio for a song or two, until they are well ahead of me to not catch up to them again... My advice is to do the same, leave early, never know when an accident will slow you down, and how much older will you be if you get there 3 minutes later??
  • Why did my question get downgraded?
  • Why oh why do people who speed think that they are the only people on the road and everyone else had better get out of their way? I drive in the left lane on the interstate, but I don't speed. I go 65 miles per hour and if someone behind me doesn't like it, there ARE two other lanes to drive in, thank you very much. I drive a very small car, and since tractor trailers aren't allowed in the far left lane, that's where I choose to be (My car literally disappears when it's surrounded by 18 wheelers, not to mention the fact that I get blown all over the road by them - so I'd rather distance myself if possible). Now, I can understand your gripe *somewhat* if you mean people who are driving slower than the speed limit, since that tends to clog the road up (most people use the left lane for getting ahead of and around all those big trucks, so if some slowpoke is jamming up the left lane, well... that irritates me, too). However, I refuse to move my economy-sized butt over for someone who simply wants to speed past me.
  • I have never lived anywhere that had different speed limits for different lanes, so perhaps my experience does not apply, but... I expect there are a variety of reasons. If you mean people who drive well below the speed limit, probably they have some mechanical, physical or visual limitation that makes them uncomfortable at highway speeds. If a car is driving at about the speed limit, some may do it to encourage other people to obey the law, others just refuse to feel obligated to accomodate law breakers, or just really don't care what other people think or do, they are just going about their business legally. If the car is going faster than the speed limit, but not as fast as the other law breakers... hmmm... I'm having trouble formulating a good reason for that one.... oooh, got one... they can only afford a speeding ticket for 10 over, not 20 over... maybe... I actually have, on a few occasions, been in the left lane through a construction area and, when the right lanes opened back up, I quickly accelerated to the speed limit but could not merge into the right lanes because so many speeders were passing me on the right. They simply could not leave enough space for me to get out of their way till things loosened up some way down the road.
    • OC Joe
THIS IS WHY! Some Americans do not understand traffic courtesy that lanes to the right are for slower traffic and the left lanes are for faster traffic. IT DOESN'T MATTER WHAT THE SPEED LIMIT IS. It is not anyone's job to attempt to force traffic slower by going slower in the fastest lanes and it can be dangerous.
  • Same reason you insist on asking duplicate questions, I guess.
  • Heyyyyy..don't talk to my mom like that...:)
  • God i hate those people... they even go like 5 miles slower than the limit, and then thers an equally slow person in the right lane and they block all the traffic.
  • I don't, but I discovered my room mate does. I was in the car with her and she got all huffy that people were "riding her butt" in the passing lane when she was doing the speed limit. I told her that they weren't, and that she should get in the right lane since the left lane is for passing. Apparently she didn't want to be behind a truck, so I told her that when she got behind one, get in the PASSING lane until she passed it and then return to the right lane if she wanted to do the speed limit. Then she insisted that you DO NOT get places faster by speeding....okay....way to avoid the solution irrationally. But she used to speed until she got a ticket. I guess some people just can't understand how the driving lanes work, or they're scared to get a ticket but they don't want to be behind trucks and opt to be annoying to everyone else instead.
  • I don't.
  • That's only when I need to make a left soon. Why go fast when you have to slow down?
  • I think going fast to then slow down would be far worse. Thanks for answering!
  • I do it to annoy you. After all, the whole world revolves around you, doesn't it? On a serious note, some states (Delaware, for instance) do not have a "keep to the right" law, and it is perfectly legal to pass on the right as well as slow pokey in the left lane.
  • We have an area of road near me where there is a passing lane. You actually have to get into the right lane to pass anyone! lol (I guess living in the sticks, things are a little backwards?) And, it drives my hubby nuts because people will drive exactly the speed limit until they get to where it's 4 lanes instead of two, then they speed up until it's 2 lanes again. Weird.
  • i wonder if those are the same ones that speed up in the slow lane when you try to pass them...?
  • Well here in the states people have their own little personal America. They have no regard for anyone but themselves. Common courtesy has no place in America today. People like to shove the speeding laws and other things in your face. When in fact the disobey so many other laws. It's the world we live in my friend. Solution? Get a truck and put a ram guard on the front. They will be terrified to drive when their little sedans are "pummeled" to nothing. Mewahaha... Anyway, I notice a majority of the slow drivers are the following: elderly people (They can't read the speed limit signs), foreigners (They can't read the speed limit signs), overweight people (They have trouble steering due to enlarged ass and stomach), people with glasses (They can't read the speed limit signs), illegals (They're scared of getting deported)... lol...
