It depends on how well it was filtered before use. Particulate matter can quite easily foul an engine's fuel system, negatively affecting performance. Of course, biofuels in general provide somewhat less gas mileage than straight petroleum-derived fuels, since vegetable-based oils have less energy density than an equivalent amount of straight diesel or gasoline. That said, those who have a essentially free supply of used cooking oil (like a guy I know) makes out like a bandit over someone who has to buy it...
