G'day Sophiesmom, Thank you for your question. The use of our words in Commonwealth English reflects a French English. It just reflects a minor difference in usage and people can understand what we are saying. Regards
-
It stems from English's mixes background of words, spellings and pronunciations. In reality, English is a very complex language, and it has spread all across the globe, incorporating and being incorporated by other languages and cultures. As such, local accents, spellings and sentence structures are different. Think of it as a breed of plant. As the plant is moved to different climates, the structure of the plant changes and melds with other varieties. What was considered English only 100 years ago would sound and look strangely different to what we speak and write today.

Why do people from America drop a u from words?? like color and favorite?? English came from England.
-
Since the people who spawned the English language are European, it might be more reasonable to ask why so many of us in the US spell such words improperly.
-
Uh, they had the language first. And I like their way better.
-
Europeans didn't add the "u" - Americans dropped it. Remember, the English language originated in Europe, not in the States. Americans dropped an "i" out of the British spelling "aluminium" too.
-
They like to be different.
-
Australia isn't part of Europe and we also spell 'colour' and 'favourite'...
