If NSAID's are supposed to inhibit inflammation, why do they inflame the digestive system?

    NSAIDs inhibit the cyclooxygenase enzymes of which there are two types, only COX-2 is important in pain relief, COX-1 is an important housekeeping enzyme and regulates gastric acid so by inhibiting it too much acid can be produced and in extreme cases can cause gastric ulcers, this is why you're supposed to take them with food.
