Surely it's because any possible survivors would be equally as likely to be spotted?
if you're in plane at height and you have to crash land, you are most likely to die...
plane crashes are few and far between but usually completley fatal.
Your chances of survival are dependent on where and how your plane goes down. The further from land and the colder the water, the less likely you are to survive beyond the water landing. However, if you do land somewhere where survival is possible, then the lifejackets will increase your odd of actually surviving.

You're reading Is it true that the only reason they have yellow life jackets on a plane, are so the bodies are more likely to be seen floating on top of ocean? I heard this from a ex special forces guy.

The chances of anyone surviving in the Ocean would be remote unless in shallow water where it would be warmer.
