Actually, this technology is still being used by the power company in some areas to read your meter. The principle is that you can have digital signals "encoded onto another signal, sort of "riding on top of the signal", in this case that's the Power coming into your house. The downside is that you lose a lot of speed due to noise. So, this technology mostly went away when we all went broadband.
