Did television and movies from the 1950s and early 1960s "mask" and "color" what society was like in real life? For example, were teens and children far more rude and violent than what was portrayed on t.v. and movies then?

I asked my father the same question, he was born in 1947 and so was a teen/early twenties through the sixties. He said that people have always been the same. Only back then everyone lied about it except to their closest friends. Everyone pretended to be good and wholesome, but really they were just in denial because they really felt like everyone else was good and wholesome. He said he knew of plenty of gays, but nobody talked about it. He knew lots of people who had sex, but they just lied about it. The difference is, today it is open discussion. Back then is was rumors and "locker room" talk. I would only add that kids were not as openly rude to adults, when I asked him why not; He responded, "Because back then you couldn't get arrested for kicking your kid's ass when he was mouthing off to an elder." Lies, denial, and ass-whoopin's sounds like a great time to be alive :).

I don't think so.Movie of any age generally reflects the status of the society at that time.In that way, I think teens were far less violent and disciplined than now.

I think so, TV and Movies are a fantasy, but I don't think they were nearly as rude as they are today. We are talking about a time when you were actually allowed to discipline them (and I don't mean beating them). But nowadays, you can't even look at your kid cross in the store without someone thinking "I'm gonna call CPS on her for abuse".

Having grown up during part of that era, I will have to say that they may have tried to sugar coat some things. However overall it was great. We never locked our doors, or windows. We could go just about anywhere we wanted and our Mother knew we would be alright. All the neighbors kept an eye on all the kids around them. If you were at a friends house and it was time to eat, it was just expected that you were to join them and eat as well. I was a great time to grow up. These days I barely let my daughter out of my site, for no telling what may happen.

Some may have been but now we have taken what would have been a small percentage of kids that have bad character traits and show them more often... shows that show kids talking back make it seem okay for all kids to do it so more kids will...
