I lived in Astoria Queens for three years in a four bedroom apartment, for $1800/mth, split with three roommates. It was a heck of a deal. And not a long subway ride into midtown. Astoria is a great neighborhood. Very safe, lots of amenities nearby. The best Greek food in town if you like that sort of thing. I loved it. Good luck. If you can make it there, you can make it anywhere!

    I live in Whitestone, Queens.

The cheapest rent you'll find here is $1,200-1,400 a Month.

If you don't mind living in Bushwick, Brooklyn, or Jamaica/Valley Stream(this is the pits, I assure you) area, you might find something slightly less than $1,000. I'd suggest advertsing for a roomate before making the move. The difference in rent between 1 and 2 bedrooms is not all that much, and the extra person may make your personal rent @ $750/mo.

You want cheaper? Look in New Jersey, and take NJ Transit or Path into the city.

I would suggest looking in New Jersey. A lot of people that work in the City live outside of the City to save money.

    There is no such thing.

But I've heard that Jamaica costs least.

I've lived in Jamaica, Queens all of 42 years and it's no cheaper here than any other borough of NYC. You should seriously consider applying for NYC Housing if you want "affordable".
