You have to risk looking like an idiot, at least some of the time. That's the nature of comedy/humor -- you don't get any guarantees that what you'll do or say is going to be good. Not taking the silence personally is hard but can be done. All the great ones have had (and may still have to) endure it.
Some have made being insulting funny. I personally like humor the most when it's not at any one person's expense; I'm not big into cruel humor. The best thing I can say about that is to put yourself in the other person's position and ask how you might feel to hear whatever you're about to say. Then make your decision about how to proceed.

You're reading People tell me I'm funny all the time, so when I get the chance I use it. But, how can I make it funny without being insulting? Plus, when I take a crack at a joke, how can I try not to look like an idiot in front of Everyone?
