  • The SPCA website states that "in the U.S. alone, approximately 4.5 million animals are killed in shelters each year simply because they have no place else to go."
  • I know about 2 to three cats are euthanized for each dog. Because most places make no effort to license cats they are less likely to be neutered and spayed for lower licensing fees.
  • I've seen figures that range from six to 12 million dogs euthanised per year, but I can't remember where I saw them. I do know that it was in the past two or three months, however.
  • A lot. Relatively few get rescued from the pounds in favor of getting a new pup or buying a specific breed as a pup. There really should be stricter licensing on owning them. Of course, it's not like a dog is going to write a great book or invent something, so euthanasia vs. being permanently held in a cage for years seems relatively kind.
  • Get with the American Humaine Society in your area! I am sure they have the answer!
