  • It could be either one. One way to determine which direction to go is to run the engine for at least 20 minutes. Turn on your defroster, set the temp to full heat. Set fan speed to medium or high. Now put your hand up near the bottom of the windshield near the defrost vents. If the air gets real hot,....you can eliminate your thermostat being stuck open. Go for the coolant temp sensor. If the air only gets slightly warm,....replace the thermostat. Rarely does a temp guage need replacing.
  • Doesn't it move between the time when you turn it on and the time it reaches its set point? If it moves up gradually, instead of in one big jump, it might be running really fine.
  • after 10 years a thermostat is a common failure, sounds like it's stuck open
