there is some security in storing your information on line with your own domain. you can safely keep confidential files at your domain site. While at a free site like tripod or geocities, the websters can access your information or delete or even mess with your pages. you can get a domain for cheap at godaddy.com and get a decent hosting package for free with tons of storage. i found godaddy.com rather complicated, but well worth the investigating for free hosting. you can get free hosting with yahoo with each yahoo email addy. and with a domain and your own hosting site you can do more creative things with your site if you have the inclination. For many a domain is just an ego trip. Their own email address. Their own name of choice. myself included. I tell people I have my own dotcom and they laugh and dont believe me.

    Hi zwatcher,

There are several things you can do with a registered domain name, that I know of.

#1) You could forward (and mask) your new domain name to your established web site. It will not eliminate the ads, however "yourdomain.com" is probably more professional appearing than "tripod.com/members/yourusername/index.html"

#2) You could purchase hosting and build a truly professional ad-free site.

#3) You could park the domain, or sell advertising space on it, and collect the revenue.

#4) You could resell or auction your domain name. Popular domain names can fetch a good deal of money.

    Hope I've been some help.
