You can get a familiarity with a language, but the best way to actually learn a language is by taking private lessons. The second best way is group classes, and then if those options are not possible, I would suggest using tapes, but you must use them consistently in order for them to be effective. I personally can not see how one can effectively learn a language on the Internet. Like I said, you can get a familiarity with a language, but actually learning the language requires more than that.
I started off with a Basic Japanese Language Teaching Manual in Spanish (my native tongue). You can download it from this link: http://www.csse.monash.edu.au/~jwb/jp_gram_esp.pdf
The thing is that most of the japanese sounds are similar to those in the spanish language. Spanish syllables are pronounced in the same way they are written (not like the English language were a letter has many different sounds to it, depending on its context). That's why it's really easy to learn to speak perfectly fluid japanese if you know spanish (with a native level).
Many japanese people told me that I have the exact pronounciation of a Tokyo citizen. Pretty cool!

japanesepod101.com is my personal suggestion. it's a community surrounding professionally made lessons that come out with new lessons a few times a week. they are up at 12000+ lesson now, after three years, and the lesson span differnet level of learning and you can try the premium stuff for your first week after regestering for the sight.
so you can ask people on the sight itself and you'll get feedback from other users as well as the actual people who make the lessons.
they website is really expansive. they have a huge english to japanese dictionary, as well as a kanji dictionary which adds all the new kanji that corresponds to their lessons as they come out. and individual pages for each grammar point to help you understand what they mean the the proper way to use them.
