Because the anonymity factor of an all-text environment on the Internet depersonalizes the questioner. People can say almost anything they want without the same kinds of repercussions they'd get with cruel or harsh behavior in face-to-face communication.
That, and some people are just rude.

It is difficult to discern intent in written form; we miss out on valuable facial cues and vocal inflection. So what may appear to be cruel or rude may often be simply the reader's interpretation. I see this happen quite often on Answerbag.

depends on the mood. I'm feeling edgy today so I think some of my answers have been harsh.
Also it's easy to be brutally honest when you don't know the situation, you don't know who you are talking to and you're looking in on someones life from a 7 word question.
It's easy for me to tell a girl who is asking about a cheating boyfriend to just leave him because he's no good. BUT really I dont know him and I dont know her so we can all be a little judgmental when it is someone else's life.

Maybe they arent being cruel, Just truthful.
And some people.. cant handle the truth.

maybe its not the answer u wanted to hear so u assume its cruel. But beware of some that are just being smart asses and want to hurt everyone!!
