  • Where is the antifreeze leaking from exactly??? I am thinking it could be a Blown head gasket or a cracked head.
  • My son's '96 Beretta is exhibiting similar signs. I topped off the coolant system, warmed up the engine and placed it up on ramps so that I could crawl inderneath. I found out that the coolant system in this car is different from others in that the reservoir is pressurized along with the rest of the system and my visual inspection could only find water trails from the area of the reservoir. I haven't finished my diagnosis but I'm fairly certain that the cap on the reservoir tank is bad. Any inability to control pressure in the system would cause problems similar to a defective thermostat. My second consern is with the plastic reservoir tank itself. Over time, with the varying pressure (along with age), the tank itself may be leaking somewhere around it's seam. I hope that this has helped. Dave in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
  • Could it be the heater core?
  • Next things to check will be the engine freeze plugs. If not that things get worse. A bad head gasket cracked head or block. Being that's a front wheel drive, if it is a cracked head or block, the car is scrap unless you are capable of doing the work yourself. And in the event it is a cracked head or block you might as well completely rebuild the engine or replace it while you're at it.
  • There's a possibility of it is a bad air intake manifold gasket. GM had a problem with them for years. Check the coolant. If it looks murky and has a brownish goo in it then this is likely the problem. It would cost about $1000 to have a garage fix it. I did it myself for the cost of a new gasket but if you aren't a mechanic then don't attempt to do it yourself.
