As a man, most nail strengthening products are unacceptable because they look like nail polish. Even the clear ones I've tried are too shiny. Any ideas for either: 1) topical products that soak in and aren't shiny, or 2) internally taken supplements?

How about using a few coats of the hardening nail polish and when it is completely dry, just use one of the lesser abrasive surfaces of a nail buffing device to roughen up the surface just slightly?

Try Matte Nail Envy by OPI, as the name implies it dries to a matte finish rather than a shiny or glossy one.

Soak your nails in salt water. It is almost costless and works great.

I remember my grandmother drinking a product called Knox for Nails every morning. I think it is still available at your local drug store.

I use Avon's product Nail Experts.
It applies like a nail varnish, but dries very quickly, within second, and disappears. No shine.
    And it works!

Go ahead and use the uncolored nail hardeners. There's nothing the least bit unmanly about having shiny fingernails, if that's what it takes to harden them and keep them from breaking.

Otherwise, you might as well just decide that it's unmanly to have fingernails that are in good condition, and that real men only have fingernails that are torn and broken.
