You're reading T or F: The present drug laws are a dismal failure. It may be the biggest business in our country. 1 out of 100 Americans is in jail because of drugs at a cost of $40,000 per person a yr. Until we use education and not jail time, it will not go away.

Brandy:
Thanks for the intelligent thoughtful reply. Very, very good.
I would like to elaborate on the use of the term "education".
Knowledge of the harmful use of drugs should begin in an early age in grade school.
There is no harm in brain washing these innocent young children. Being brain washed against the horrors of drugs is better than being ignorant.

But we do that already: I'm 50, and even all the way back in the 1960's drug-prevention education was soaked into children early in their training. Later on, I saw my own step-daughters go through basically that same kind of constant conditioning: DARE to stay off drugs, etc. In the U.S., I doubt that a significant percentage of our children have avoided such education. It may have some effect, it's hard to say. But I think the bottom line is that when people are in great pain, they look for ways to relieve it, and drugs come up as one solution. Not a very good one, but a popular one. Still, only relieving the causes of the pain will really remove the temptation.

Brand Y:
I do agree with you.
Hitler proved the power of brain washing young children
Religious cults use the mighty power of brain washing.
To just say DARE, and do nothing more will not suffice.
The US drug problem is out of control, and drastic measures must be taken. What is being done now doesn't work.

Well I'm mightily opposed to brainwashing in all forms, so I don't think we're going to agree on the strategy. The problem with brainwashing in order to accomplish some goal -- even if the goal is good, is that it's short sighted. To me, the whole *point* of life is to wake up: to free ourselves from beliefs and conditioning that produces the "prison" in which people are alive in name only, but not really in spirit. Every bit of conditioning that goes in has to come back out for that to happen, so intentionally creating more conditioning may produce short-term results, but damages the long-term prospects.

Isn't it brain washing about our feelings on war. The marching bands playing inspiring music, heroes, medals and pretty uniforms, and the bad guy. Enough to make you want to go out and get killed for a medal.
I can understand your apprehension of the term "brain washing". In the circumstances, however,to curtail a drug epidemic, it would be the less of two evils.

Yes, governments manipulate emotions to promote wars. "Brainwashing" is a bit of a vague term, but I think that qualifies.
Basically my point of view is rather unusual: to me, it's much more important to promote "awakening" than it is to prevent drug abuse. A person who sleepwalks through their life isn't *that* much better off than a person who is stoned, so inducing more sleepwalking in the form of drug prevention conditioning doesn't really get me excited as a strategy.

Basically, what you are saying is the the remedy of brain washing is worse than the problem of excessive drug use. Hummmmmm
People who do not use any drugs, whatsoever, because of brain washing are much better off than than a non-brain washed individual who uses drugs. Who is right?
