How many people actually respond to unsolicited phone call and emails touting for business? Is it really enough to make it worth the trouble and expense for the companies who do it?

Businesses stop doing things that don't work. For example, nobody comes to your house selling brushes or vacuums anymore, because they can't make a profit doing that--travel costs eat up the profits. Enough people respond to spam and telemarketers that companies will continue to do it until it stops being profitable.
