  • Newer harddrives has greater capacity and, compared to six years ago, greater speed with lower access times. So, you might actually find an increase in performance with an upgrade!
  • Not helpful, but I am amazed you've had a hard drive that lasted 6 years. I think that's probably twice my hard drive's usual lifespan. What brand, if you know offhand?
  • faster access depends on rpm, not disk size, 7200rpm is standard for desktop hard drives and 10000 is highest i've seen for a desktop, 5400 is standard for laptop and 7200 is the highest i've seen for a laptop. The fastest are the solid state drives, since they do not have a spinning disk to store data on but are more like flash memory.
