Newer harddrives has greater capacity and, compared to six years ago, greater speed with lower access times. So, you might actually find an increase in performance with an upgrade!

Not helpful, but I am amazed you've had a hard drive that lasted 6 years. I think that's probably twice my hard drive's usual lifespan. What brand, if you know offhand?

faster access depends on rpm, not disk size, 7200rpm is standard for desktop hard drives and 10000 is highest i've seen for a desktop, 5400 is standard for laptop and 7200 is the highest i've seen for a laptop. The fastest are the solid state drives, since they do not have a spinning disk to store data on but are more like flash memory.
