Question

Help answer this question below.

What causes me to fidget, rock back and forth or side to side, or tap toes/move legs or hands/arms so some part of my body is constantly moving? I'm on prozac for being bi-polar but the need to move is getting worse. I don't feel stressed.

I wonder why you aren't on LITHIUM as well. That would take care of the manic 'highs' of BIPOLAR DISORDER. Being overly fidgety may be part of it.

PROZAC is usually given for DEPRESSION alone - or the 'lows' of BIPOLAR DISORDER.

I'm on LITHIUM AND EFFEXOR. I'd like to get different meds as I've put on 100lbs and still am depressed! I also get fidgety the way you do, but it's usually when I'm so tired I can't keep my eyes open but MUST stay awake: it probably happens (subconciously) as a way to keep me from falling asleep!

See the Doctor and ask what he/she is doing for the MANIC part of your BIPOLAR DISORDER - it sounds like he/she's isn't treating it. Ask about LITHIUM. It's the first drug of choice for BIPOLAR DISORDER, even though there are some newer ones around.

Actually, the rocking and movement doesn't bother me half as much as it bothers those I work with. I care for people with Alzheimer's and they get extremely aggitated and tell me to stop moving so much or if I really have to do "that"! I do have restless leg syndrome and have to take Tylenol PM to get to sleep due to it.

Your prozac apparently is not working and you need to revisit your doctor.

Things have apparently changed in your life and you need to be re-evaluated.

I tap on things, but i am an ex-drummer and this is normal.

Your medication needs to be changed.

  • I would speak to your doctor. It is possible that it is a side effect of your meds. It is also possible that it is realted to the bipolar or it might have nothing to do with either. I also have bipolar and I have experienced those symptoms when I was anxious or hypomanic. There is also something called restless legs syndrom which is when you constantly feel like you need to move your legs. I don't know if that can apply to other parts of the body as well.

It's anxiety. How long have you been on the meds? I was on Prozac and I had a heart attack and had to go to the hospital. The meds start off with opposite effects and as your body gets used to them, they start to calm you down.
