I have always loved writing but find it hard to stick by most books cover to cover. Im an aspiring writer and ive heard that in order to be a good writer one has to be well read. I like writing about what i live. am i messing up?

It's absolutely true that a good writer is well read. You should also write about what you know. You're not messing up. Keep writing. Keep thinking of story ideas.

i'm curious as to why you might not be able to read most books cover to cover ... attentional problems? boredom? too long a book? i think that all of us ought to be well read, especially writers. reading the tone, the flow of passages, meter, rhythm, plot, setting, theme, settings characterizations and descriptions, we begin to absorb some of those elements that have made a few writers write masterpieces. writing about our own experience is one of the most commons methods in the arts.
